Hey! Someone is watching you!
But the question is – Do we really believe it?
Every look, every word, every action, every facebook status, every tweet, every reaction, every response, @ church: every time we worship, pray, listen to a message (or tune out), every time our talk “goes down the drain”, whatever we entertain ourselves with… All of it is planting a seed. Whoever is close to us, ie: small group, family, friends, are gleaning something from us.
Let’s use a scripture from last weeks EDGE reading.
John 3:6Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit[b] gives birth to spirit.
Those around you are watching your reactions! It is proof of the work of God in our lives… With our actions, we are doing one of two things:
- (Reacting to the situation) causing the flesh/(Who we are in our own strength… without Christ) to grow stronger or
- (Responding to God’s will) causing our Spirit/New man (Who we are with God’s Power…In Christ) to grow stronger.
So as a Christian, our life should be a constant witness of who Jesus is…. but we often forget that our every action is causing either flesh or spirit to grow stronger.
My dad used to tell me that everything was significant and brought “God into everything”. It used to drive me crazy how he “over-spiritualized” things…. until I realized that what he was saying was directly from the Bible.
A God pleasing Christian/leader does not separate life into categories of God influenced or not. God is involved in every decision and thought.
Remember: We can never do what God has called for us to do, until we first Be what God has called us to be. God looks at our heart!
Every action is a fruit/result of our thought life!
Also, EVERYTHING we are doing is planting a seed in our hearts and in others hearts as well.
Let me ask you a question: What kind of Fruit are you producing?
Luke 6:43“No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit.44Each tree is recognized by its own fruit…..
45The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart…
For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks.
*What is coming out of our mouths even around our Christian friends?
God wants good fruit to be produced in our lives, but we can only produce that “good fruit” if we are allowing the spirit of God to help us.. Planting seeds that give birth to Spiritual growth… spirit giving birth to spirit. God want our fruit/seed to be to “be perfect as He is perfect.”
Um, wait what? Now we have to be perfect? God has pretty high standards for us. Perfect? Wow.
So how do we change our lives and actions so that we can “be perfect as He is perfect”?
The perfection God desires is perfection in our heart. Did you also know that our attitudes are transferring to others too?
We excuse our thoughts because well, those are private. Really? God said we must give account for every thought of the heart.
Our entertainment, circumstances, our own heart and even satan can be the source of the thought…
What we are held accountable for is what we do with the thought.
Strongholds, wrong desires, sin and addictions are all birthed in our heart, our thoughts (flesh gives birth to flesh). Every thing we are allowing our heart to dwell on is planting a seed in us. Every seed produces fruit.
With every thought we have a choice to:
- take the thought in and dwell on it or (React in the flesh) or
- immediately filter the thought, throw away vain imaginations and then determine if this thought will produce good fruit or not before we let it in (Respond to God’s Spirit)
… the mind is the battlefield!!!!
2 cor. 10: 3For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. 4The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. 5We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.
How can we: have good attitudes that produce good actionsand in turn create good fruit (in you & in others)= the “Good future God has planned for us”?
1) Filter our minds by…. The Holy Spirit-
Born again = born of the Spirit. A true christian does not live by what he desires in the flesh… what he naturally wants to say in the tough circumstances, how he desires to give into sin, or allow circumstance to “go down the drain”. A true Christian lives, talks, acts by the power/filter of the Spirit. the Holy Spirit alive, at work, enabling us.
Acts 1:8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.Galatians 2:20 “I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me...He who began a good work For I am confident of this very thing, that in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus. …
So to be perfect is not for us to do on our own… But the Holy Spirit empowers us and gives us grace.
2) Renew our minds, will and actions by the Word of God.
We need to have our mind “washed out with soap” by reading, hearing and applying God’s Word…. Then we will be able to prove what God’s perfect will is for our lives.
Romans 12:2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be
transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test
and approve what God’s will is–his good, pleasing and perfect will.
3) Get Grace from God by asking for it in Prayer.
The Holy Spirit gives us grace, but it must be activated. Grace is God’s Divine enablement to do His will. We do not have to try to be perfect on our own. He gives us grace to obey Him. Prayer is admitting you need God. God promises to give grace to the humble, those who admit they need God. We are powerless without God’s grace~ so ask for it!
When you do these things…. you will naturally begin to produce good fruit in your life… your words, actions, thoughts will all be on track to becoming perfectly pleasing to God. Then you can say to others as Paul said, “Follow me as I follow Christ”.
Somebody is watching you… and you are planting seeds that are producing fruit! What kind of fruit are you producing in others?Food for Thought:
|Ephesians 5 >> New International Version|
1Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children
2and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.3Butamong you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people. 4Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving. 5For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person—such a man is an idolater—has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.a 6Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God’s wrath comes on those who are disobedient.7Therefore do not be partners with them.8For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light 9(for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) 10and find out what pleases the Lord. 11Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. 12For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. 13But everything exposed by the light becomes visible, 14for it is light that makes everything visible. This is why it is said:
“Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”
15Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, 16making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. 17Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. 18Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. 19Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, 20always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.21Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.
