The Kindling

It is June 1st in Northern California, usually a sunny very warm time of year, but today it is winter-like outside. Coffee and a blanket have been my must-have’s of the day… and now thinking a hot crackling fire sounds like a nice addition to my day. I really love a roaring fire on a cold day, but there is nothing worse than a fire that refuses to start. A while back I was trying to light a fire log– It was a new environmentally friendly log. I Followed all the instructions on the package which called for me unwrapping the log, and     using the wrapping paper crumpled up under the log as a sort of kindling to light the log…..

So I lit the paper on fire, the paper started to burn… but very soon the fire died even after multiple tries…. Ugh! I became skeptical that this new PC fire log was a dud. Nice packaging but not gonna work. I tried over and over to get the log started, it would light up with a super large flame, but quickly die out. I was irritated and tired of re-lighting the log over and over again. I almost gave up on the log but I got a genius idea :o) Use different kindling….duh! The packaging paper itself was simply not enough get the fire started or to keep the fire burning.  I used a kindling helper packet… lit the packet…. and what do you know,  Roaring fire! The log was not a dud afterall…. it was a problem with the kindling…. That log burned bright and strong all evening.

The Key- the kindling.

Wiki=pedia for Kindling: Material for starting a fire,

So here is how it applies to us:

The Fire Log = Us. Our identity. Our potential and God given purpose. Our Dreams and desires given to us by God. Prophetic insight from the bible and Words spoken over our lives.

The Wrapper = Our understanding of the way the “fire log” will work. Our own effort to keep it burning.

The Kindling = What is working on the inside of us….

To build a fire for God that lasts, the kindling has to be The Holy Spirit.

We are like the beautifully packaged PC fire log, and many times we rely on ourselves and our own strength and understanding to keep the passion in our walk with God alive.

Your dependance on the Holy Spirit is directly related to your passion for God.

God never intended for us to figure it all out on our own… or try to keep the fire of God burning by our own effort. He has given us the Holy Spirit who keeps fans the flame of our relationship with God. It is a sign of immaturity to think that we need another conference, camp or inspiring word to fan the fire of God in our lives. The Holy Spirit works from the Inside out working Grace in and through us…. It’s the everyday situations and how we respond to them and depend on the Holy Spirit in them that fuels our fire for God.

An everyday work. An everyday cross. An everyday choice. An Everyday dependance on  Holy Spirit Power.

Whatever is Kindling on the inside is igniting your fire, passions! Conversation of your heart…

Sometimes we sabotage our own fire: These things start a fire alright, but it is the wrong kind of fire! It leads to destruction of our walk with God just as a wildfire destroys a city.

“kindling” that builds a destroying fire:

  • Thinking patterns  – negative, frustrated, joyless
  • Philippians 4:8
Finally, brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are honest, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

Psalms 39:3 My heart grew hot within me,
and as I meditated, the fire burned;
then I spoke with my tongue:

  • Worldly passions – un-balanced passion for work, school or hobbies; Ungodly relationships, wrong friends, sin
  • Disappointments  – un-met expectations left unhealed by God , discouragement, death of potential in self and others.
  • Your past –past victories that you can’t seem to maintain, or past mistakes that keep following you.
  • Words  – Our own confession, Things other people say, quarreling and gossip.

Proverbs 26:21 As charcoal to embers and as wood to fire, so is a quarrelsome person for kindling strife.

Psalm 19:14 Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in your sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.

How to keep your fire for God burning:

Let go of trying to do things in your own strength and your own way. Let the Holy Spirit fuel your fire:

1-Be filled with the spirit! Pray in the Spirit and in tongues everyday and about everything! Go to God with everything.

2- Rely on the Holy Spirit,

  • Listen for his leading, to be a witness of Jesus to those around you
  • Ask for strength to use the gifts your have been given
  • Ask for His help everyday to be filled with and walk in the fruit of the spirit… Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, and Self-Control.

Matt. 3:10-11 And even now the ax is laid to the root of the trees. Therefore every tree which does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

Romans 15:13
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

If it has been hard for you to stay passionate for God, I want to remind you, You are not a dud, a failure, or unable…. you may just be using the wrong kindling for your fire!

Even if you are passionate for God and just want to burn brighter,
